Update of File Formats

Get an overview of the upcoming changes to the payment infrastructure and file formats resulting from new requirements for payment systems, including measures to enhance security.

All file formats are affected to varying degrees. It is therefore important to update your file formats well in advance. It may require significant and time-consuming changes to your setup.

Please note that even if you already use ISO 20022 XML as your payment format, you may still need to make minor adjustments.

Our recommendation: Switch to ISO 20022 XML before 15 November 2026

As a general rule, we recommend using the ISO 20022 XML format. It is a global standard format that supports all future changes and new functionalities.

By using ISO 20022 XML, you benefit from a higher degree of standardisation, making it easier to exchange information between different systems and parties. This creates a more efficient and consistent way of working, both now and in the future.

You may also consider whether the transition to a new format offers a good opportunity to implement Bank Connect, which may further streamline and simplify your payment processes.

Time schedule for changes

Autumn 2026 - cross-border transfers

  • From November 2026, it will become mandatory to include the recipient's address when making cross-border transfers.
  • Payments that do not contain sufficient recipient address details will be rejected.
  • Accurate recipient address details help ensure the correct processing of payment data by both the sending and receiving bank, in accordance with international sanctions requirements and applicable legislation.
  • This reduces the risk of delayed or rejected payments due to lack of information.

Several benefits of migrating to ISO 20022 XML

One global, standardised format for all payment types

The format supports all current and future payment types, both domestic and international.

Consequently, there is only a need to support a single format, making it simpler and more cost-effective to implement future format updates.

ISO 20022 XML follows defined standards, paving the way for standardisation across systems and business partners.

Ready for the payment infrastructure of the future

ISO 20022 XML is a flexible format that can easily accommodate future enhancements and changes introduced through new regulatory requirements.

Clearing systems across countries use ISO 20022 XML for payment processing, meaning that future changes will be based on this format.

The format improves compliance screening and contributes to greater security when making payments.

The format enables more structured data for reconciliation purposes, which can be used in both existing and new payment services, depending on your needs and requirements.
